ASSIGNMENT:
Imagine that you have been hired to lead a tour of either the Medieval Art or the Islamic Art Galleries at the MET Museum. Your goal is to teach the tour group about the range of artistic forms and media employed in either Medieval Art or Art of the Islamic World. Choose 3 objects from the galleries to include in your tour.
Next, please create a slide and add it to the class slideshow HERE.
ON THE SLIDE – write your NAME and:
- Describe the nature of the group you are leading (your classmates, elementary schoolchildren, tourists from Dubai, art historians, or whatever other type of group of people you can think of);
- Post images of your 3 chosen objects from the galleries at the MET and properly Identify all objects
IN THE NOTES: - Describe why you think that your particular group would be interested in each of the objects; and
- Describe how you think that these objects will teach the tour group about the range of artistic forms and media employed in either Early Christian Art or Arts of the Islamic World.
- Comment on two entries by your classmates.
To comment on a classmate’s entry (you must comment on 2!) type into the notes underneath that entry and sign your name. When writing comments for this assignment you might want to suggest alternate objects from the galleries that would better fulfill their goals or interest the group they describe.

1) Choose 3 objects (from lectures 4 and 5) to explain the development of the Contrapposto Pose. Support your claims with formal evidence from each sculpture.
2) How have funerary monuments (memorials, tombstones, and etc.) changed in contemporary times from the examples we see in global ancient art? How are they similar or different? What do these monuments say about our culture and our identities? (Cite at least 3 examples/objects from lecture. Make sure to use proper titles and cultures)
3) Why are the Parthenon Marbles so controversial? Make a case for either keeping the them at the British Museum or returning them to Greece. Support argument claims with evidence discussed in class.

Part 1 ASSIGNMENT: RENAMING THE BAROQUE
After familiarizing yourself with Baroque Art, please retitle the Baroque Period with a different name. Consider the impact of using a word with some negative associations (“baroque” as a term deriving from a Portuguese word for an irregular pearl) and see how a new name captures the visual characteristics and themes of the art.
You must craft of a convincing new name and in 150-250 words demonstrate why it is a convincing name with knowledge of the period style. Use examples from the readings (specific artworks and their visual characteristics) to support your claim.

How are artists Kehinde Wiley and Yinke Shonibare rewriting history with their works (above, #6 and #8)? Choose one to discuss in depth: Why do you think Shonibare chose a Rococo work to inspire his 2001 painting OR why do you think Wiley chose a Neoclassical work to inspire his 2005 painting?
