PART 1 ASSIGNMENT: PAINTING THE NEWS
You learned about Gericault’s painting “The Raft of the Medusa”  and how the painter was inspired by a real-life event that he read about in the newspapers. In 1-2 paragraphs (150-250 words), discuss how images change our perceptions of the news, and how contemporary photojournalism is similar to and different from Gericault’s painting. One way to get started thinking about this issue is to read the New York Times article “Ferguson Images Evoke Civil Rights Era and Changing Visual Perceptions”

PART 2 ASSIGNMENT: WHAT IS STYLE, ANYWAY?
Provide 3 additional examples from any Realist painter (i.e. Millet, Bonheur) or any of the Impressionists including post-impressionists (i.e. Seurat, Cézanne, or van Gogh – who were not covered in the above videos) in order to explain why your chosen works of art are representative for the period in which it was created. This exercise helps us practice both contextual and formal skills to identify a painting’s style.

NOTE: Please support the claims in your writing with evidence from the readings about style and the period in which the works were created.

ASSIGNMENT PART 1: WHAT MAKES ART MODERN?
Choose 2 artworks from the readings (one European and one N. American) and explain, with evidence from the readings or videos, what makes them MODERN – consider both form and content (150-250 words)

ASSIGNMENT PART 2: THE PRIMITIVISM DEBATE
Please develop working definitions for “cultural appropriation” and “artistic influence.” If your last name starts with an A-K you will be arguing that “Modernist primitivism constitutes cultural appropriation.” If your last name begins with an L-Z you will be arguing that “Modernist primitivism is an operation of artistic influence.” See below for debate resources. (150-250 words)
